Handley Page Argosy, Imperial Airways - gouache

Handley Page argosy

collection de l'artiste / Collection of the artist

At the end of 1926, the airline between London and Baghdad was well established and the RAF replaced by the Imperial Airways. British aircrafts like the Handley Page Argosy had poor performances but were confortable and quite reliable. The British had buried the refueling tanks at various stops in the Iraki desert. Some nomadic tribes often attacked these tanks convinced that their camels would fly if they gave them some gazoline like the British did with the "iron birds".
