September teh 23th, 1913, Roland Garros marks an historical event by crossing the Mediterranean Sea with his 80HP engined Morane Saulnier. After take off from Fregus in the southeast of France, he loses a piece of his engine flying off Corsica (the background of the painting). He lands at Bizerte, Tunesia after an eight hours flight with only five liters petrol left in his tank !
